Description
'Tiger, Tiger*, burning bright,
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand
or eye could frame thy fearful
symmetry?
In what distant deeps
or skies,
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire?
When the stars threw down their spears
And water'd heaven with their tears
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the lamb make thee?
Tiger, Tiger, burning bright,
in the forests of the night:
What immortal hand or eye,
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?
William Blake'
[* Originally spelled 'Tyger']
This fanciful exposition of the words of stanzas 1,2, 5 and 6 of Blake's famous poem (published in 1794) considers how - and whether - an all-powerful God could dare to make a such savage, yet at the same time beautiful beast. This raises the broader perennial questions we have about the nature of God.
In case you are baffled, William Blake's own name is included at the head - where it should be.
