Description
This composition of 16 photogrqphs is from a series taken over a number of years in different places when I realised that this had become a photograhic hobby - obsession?! of mine. They derive not only from Great Britain and hoildays in Europe as a whole but one from the Middle East - then American friends will note one from the USA, to be explained. And so, from the top left : Malta, a former British colony with a strong sense of attachment to Great Britain; the next in Cumbria, VR meaning that it has been there for over 100 years, under Victoria's rule; Boulogne, France; Eire (once red but painted green when Eire ahcieved independence; Bath, England, another very early Victorian box with the amazing co-incidence of six red cars behind it; then an English modern box, even now superceded; a golden reflection on a box at the General Post Office, Washington, DC, USA; A letterbox in a small village in Yorkshire where the author, Alan Bennett, has a house; a box at the Electric Railway Station in Laxey, Isle of Man (my home island); a photograph of the same letterbox being posted in Lancaster, Lancashire, UK; one in Cyprus; Adare, Eire; Bristol Cathedral (on the day women were first ordained there as priests in the Church of England); a box at the Giants' Causeway, Northern Ireland; the rarity of a postbox for King Edward VIII, who reigned for less than a year in 1936, there being only 130 left and finally at the Church of the Annunciaton, Nazaareth, Israel.
