Description
This original stereoscopic card from the 1860s shows Lancaster Castle, UK, the main gateway being virtually unchanged since then and probably from many centuries before that, It was founded almost 1000 years ago and its real beginnings were from Roman times. The collection and viewing of these cards were a popular pastime in Victorian society, using special viewers to see impressive 3D views. I have tinted this copy of the originally plain sepia card to reproduce the style sometimes then used for more personalised collections. The surroundings of the Castle have changed: the cottage and tree have gone as has, sadly, the chicken pen (including turkey?!) on the left. The crinoline dresses of the ladies help to date the image.
