Description
This view of the Crook o' Lune, near my Caton home, not far from Lancaster ('Lune-chester') in the north west of England, shows a part of a sharp curve in the river from which it derives its name. The river bank forms part of the River Lune Millennium Park which stretches along the route of the old railway line and now provides walking and cycling access and rural sculpture as well as picnicing sites. In the distance is the peak of Ingleborough which was a sight uplifting to the spirit as I drove home from work for more than 30 years. Turner painted this scene from a higher viewpoint, one of the few recognisable similarities being the distant view of Hornby Castle on the left. Yes, the fisherman was there as I attempted to recreate the evening tranqullity.
