Description
Topiary - the art of clipping foliage into defined shapes - in Euope dates from Roman times. Having fallen out of favour, it was revived in the seventeenth century century, this example at Levens Hall, Cumbria, England, is the oldest and finest such garden in the world. Some of the yew trees are over 300 years old, having been there since the original plaanting in 1690. This tree, known as The Umbrella Tree - one of the originals - has been nominated by the Woodland Trust in the UK for the 'Tree of the Year' Award 2016' .Googling the website is certainly worth the effort!
