Artist's Description
This psychiatric ward of Lancaster Moor Hospital - an old asylum as they were once called - in the north of England had been recently closed when it became a storage place for redundant wheelchairs. This symbolises for me the great achievement of the rehabilitation of even the most disabled residents of what was once a most forbidding institution into normal community living.
About Nigel Radcliffe
I was born a Manxman - a native of the Isle of Man in the centre of the British Isles - and my heritage from there sometimes brings a Celtic element to my work. However, another side of my personality has often been expressed in my acrylic painting and photography in a more extraverted, Mediterranean way. This has no doubt been influenced by the fact that I have travelled through Europe and elsewhere in the past, but I have come to look for inspiration nearer to my home in recent years in a beautiful part of the north of England. My Christian faith underlies what I do in art as in the rest of my life. I am a retired clinical psychologist and am married with children and grandchildren.
