Artist's Description
This traditional collage is based on a proverb, or sometimes described as a quotation derived from the works of Shakespeare or the Bible. I have used a single eye from the self-portraits of distinguished, if not genius, European artists. They are, from the left: Jan van Eyck, Hans Holbein, Albrecht Durer, Rembrandt van Rijn, Antony van Dyck, Thomas Gainsborough, Joshua Reynolds and Vincent van Gogh. 2020 has been a year for reflection as well as anxiety and fortitude.
About Nigel Radcliffe
I was born a Manxman - a native of the Isle of Man in the centre of the British Isles - and my heritage from there sometimes brings a Celtic element to my work. However, another side of my personality has often been expressed in my acrylic painting and photography in a more extraverted, Mediterranean way. This has no doubt been influenced by the fact that I have travelled through Europe and elsewhere in the past, but I have come to look for inspiration nearer to my home in recent years in a beautiful part of the north of England. My Christian faith underlies what I do in art as in the rest of my life. I am a retired clinical psychologist and am married with children and grandchildren. Nigel, what AMAZING entries...I love the introspective journey thru the biblical and proverbial explorations of the metaphor suggesting the Eye as window to the Soul...and you chose such brilliant Artistic visionaries to showcase it!!....I love how you set this 2020 collage for the 2021 stage to follow...
