Artist's Description

The Church of Panagia (Our Lady) tis Aggeloktistis - meaning 'built by angels' - near Larnaca in Cyprus, gained its name from the legend that an army of angels came down at night and changed its location when it was being built. The fifth century basilica was replaced by the 11th century building standing now.
The shrub at its base with the exotic and beautiful flowers, which can grow up to nine feet high, is the yellow bird of paradise bush, though unrelated to the commonly named bird of paradise flower, the strelizia. Its botanical name is caesalpinia gilliesii. While native to tropical America, especially Argentina and Uruguay, it is naturalised in Texas and thrives in Turkey in the Old World.
