Description
When I first painted this, I abandoned it because I did not think it could convey the wild beauty of the landscape. It is a place very close to my heart as it is at the top of a glen in my island home of the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea, at the very centre of the British Isles. It is difficult to know how someone who is not familiar with the place will see it. There is a fascination on the island with ruined farmhouses which are known in the native Manx language as tholtans. This one must have one of the most outstanding views. I once fantasised that I would buy it, restore it and live there in my retirement! The purple heather is ubiquitous on the island and add a lively colour to the landscape, often mixed with yellow gorse in many places.

Gorgeous! Not easy. I feel the same way about paintings of my home landscapes. They can never be as beautiful as the real place but - at least they can bring back the memories and help me hold on to them. I'd love to visit the Isle of Man someday. Just watched an old movie set there called "Owd Bob". Amazing beauty there...

Thank you Bonnie for your kind and interesting words. Yes, the nostalgia is not the same as the real thing. Nevertheless, I'm sure you would receive a warm welcome in the island if you ever went there!
