Van Gogh's sunflowers can never be forgotten when one sees a field like this, but I felt it was worth attempting an impressionistic - though I wouldn't really call it an impressionist - view of this scene on Jersey, the largest of the British Channel Islands off the coast of France. The joyous nature of the yellow against the azure blue was irresistible.

I was born a Manxman - a native of the Isle of Man in the centre of the British Isles - and my heritage from there sometimes brings a Celtic element to my work. However, another side of my personality has often been expressed in my acrylic painting and photography in a more extraverted, Mediterranean way. This has no doubt been influenced by the fact that I have travelled through Europe and elsewhere in the past, but I have come to look for inspiration nearer to my home in recent years in a beautiful part of the north of England.
