Description
The Queen's Guide to the Sands is a unique royal appointment in the United Kingdom and it is is an honour, held from 1963 until 2019 by Cedric Robinson, involving the official entitlement to guide people on foot across the vast tidal sands of Morecambe Bay in the north of England. The Bay falls between the counties of Lancashire and Cumbria. He has conducted groups of up to 600, most of whom do this with sponsorship for charities. The guidance requires extreme expertise and knowledge of the ever-changing and very rapid rise and fall of the tides, which at high tide cover the Bay and at low tide only in parts. Determining a route can be dangerous and quicksands are not unknown. Robinson was the 25th such incumbent, the first being appointed in 1548. It used to be that horses and carriages crossed and Robinson guided Prince Philip driving in such a way in 1985.
He has written several autobiographical books.
