Description
A wooden cross which has been carried by Christian pilgrims along the Via Dolorosa ( 'Way of Suffering', where Jesus is said to have walked to his death) rests against the wall of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, the place which is believed by most denominations of the Christian church to be where he was buried and rose again from the tomb. It also covers the spot which has been thought to be the hill of Golgotha (the Place of the Skull) where he was crucified a short distance away. An alternative site is thought by Protestant churches to be the Garden Tomb outside the present city walls.
The first Christian Roman Emperor, Constantine, ordered a temple dedicated to Venus to be replaced by a church in about 325/326 and it was here that his mother, Helena, is believed to have discovered the True Cross and a tomb.
