I have to confess that, having left my tripod at home in the UK on a long weekend trip, I had to make do with leaning against a pillar to take this long exposure photo of the magnificent Doge's Palace in Venice, the jewel of the city. The first such palace was built on this spot in the ninth century.

I was born a Manxman - a native of the Isle of Man in the centre of the British Isles - and my heritage from there sometimes brings a Celtic element to my work. However, another side of my personality has often been expressed in my acrylic painting and photography in a more extraverted, Mediterranean way. This has no doubt been influenced by the fact that I have travelled through Europe and elsewhere in the past, but I have come to look for inspiration nearer to my home in recent years in a beautiful part of the north of England.
