Jesus makes this mysterious and controversial statement to Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews, in a conversation when the latter acknowledges that Jesus comes from God (John Chapter 3.) 'Born again' is sometimes translated as 'born from above', 'born anew' and then ' born of water and the Spirit'. In other words, it means (like the butterfly) a person needs to go through a complete change in their life - a rebirth - through the work of God. Jesus proceeds to talk about earthly and heavenly things and the need to believe in him to have eternal life (verse 16.)

I was born a Manxman - a native of the Isle of Man in the centre of the British Isles - and my heritage from there sometimes brings a Celtic element to my work. However, another side of my personality has often been expressed in my acrylic painting and photography in a more extraverted, Mediterranean way. This has no doubt been influenced by the fact that I have travelled through Europe and elsewhere in the past, but I have come to look for inspiration nearer to my home in recent years in a beautiful part of the north of England.
