The gulet is a particular form of traditional sailing vessel, from the area around Bodrum on the coast of Turkey and known for tourist cruises as well as for more local fishing and sponging trips in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. I was taking a walk from our hotel early one morning when I saw this example.
I was born a Manxman - a native of the Isle of Man in the centre of the British Isles - and my heritage from there sometimes brings a Celtic element to my work. However, another side of my personality has often been expressed in my acrylic painting and photography in a more extraverted, Mediterranean way. This has no doubt been influenced by the fact that I have travelled through Europe and elsewhere in the past, but I have come to look for inspiration nearer to my home in recent years in a beautiful part of the north of England.
