Artist's Description

Topiary - the art of clipping foliage into defined shapes - in Europe dates from Roman times. Having fallen out of favour, it was revived in the seventeenth century. This is a modest part of the oldest and finest such garden in the world at Levens Hall in Cumbria, in the north of England, Some of the yew trees are over three hundred years old, being there since the initial planting in 1690. The website is certainly worth a visit! I thought that this particular planting of verbena flowers was especially attractive in enhancing the greenery.

I was born a Manxman - a native of the Isle of Man in the centre of the British Isles - and my heritage from there sometimes brings a Celtic element to my work. However, another side of my personality has often been expressed in my acrylic painting and photography in a more extraverted, Mediterranean way. This has no doubt been influenced by the fact that I have travelled through Europe and elsewhere in the past, but I have come to look for inspiration nearer to my home in recent years in a beautiful part of the north of England. My Christian faith underlies what I do in art as in the rest of my life. I am a retired clinical psychologist and am married with children and grandchildren.
