Artist's Description

I came across this magnificent specimen of english oak standing alone on moorland near my home in north Lancashire, UK. It was early morning and the light cast a range of colours from light to dark shadows, this being exaggerated by autumn getting underway. The oak is often used in the name of public houses ('pubs') such as 'The Royal Oak', commemorating the event in 1651 of King Charles II hiding in one to escape Cromwell's marauders. Otherwise, old English language might be used to render the name 'Ye Olde English Oake.' The wood of the oak has a long history of use in the building of ships.

Nigel Radcliffe

I was born a Manxman - a native of the Isle of Man in the centre of the British Isles - and my heritage from there sometimes brings a Celtic element to my work. However, another side of my personality has often been expressed in my acrylic painting and photography in a more extraverted, Mediterranean way. This has no doubt been influenced by the fact that I have travelled through Europe and elsewhere in the past, but I have come to look for inspiration nearer to my home in recent years in a beautiful part of the north of England. My Christian faith underlies what I do in art as in the rest of my life. I am a retired clinical psychologist and am married with children and grandchildren.
