Description
I came across this magnificent specimen of english oak standing alone on moorland near my home in north Lancashire, UK. It was early morning and the light cast a range of colours from light to dark shadows, this being exaggerated by autumn getting underway. The oak is often used in the name of public houses ('pubs') such as 'The Royal Oak', commemorating the event in 1651 of King Charles II hiding in one to escape Cromwell's marauders. Otherwise, old English language might be used to render the name 'Ye Olde English Oake.' The wood of the oak has a long history of use in the building of ships.
