Description
This photograph, taken in Kos, our favourite holiday island in the Greek Aegean Sea - the Dodecanese to be precise - is one of my favourite pictures from when I had a preoccupation with capturing images of local lepidoptera, especially early in the morning when they are are often not only at their more sluggish as they stir, but also when it is cool enough for me to be wandering about! This particular swallowtail (papilio machaon), from over 550 species, is sometimes referred to as the Old World swallowtail, ranging across Europe and Asia, but it can also be found in North America. It is very rare in Britain where it is the UK's largest butterfly. I happened upon several of these while wandering through sand dunes near the sea.
