Description
While the tradition of the Christmas tree in Europe dates back centuries - and Queen Victoria knew it as a child of 13 in 1832 - a boost to its popularity came after its publicity in 1848 when it was given a full-page engraved image in the Illustrated London News with the Royal Family shown surrounding it. This is a copy of that document in my possession. A few lines of its description may amuse the reader: "The tree is a young fir of about eight feet high and has six tiers of branches. On each tier, or branch, are arranged a dozen wax tapers. Pendant from the branches are elegant trays, baskets. bonbonnieres and other receptacles for sweetmeats...Fancy cakes, gilt gingercake and eggs filled with sweetmeats are also suspended by variously coloured ribbons...." Sounds delicious!
