Description
The vast expanses of the sands of Morecambe Bay, which straddle Lancashire and Cumbria in the north of England, are a favourite haunt of birdwatchers, not least for the likes of flocks of oystercatchers gathering here on a sand bank. They search for shellfish along shores and prise them open with their long beaks. The estuary is that of the River Lune which runs down past the city of Lancaster into the Irish Sea and the tides come in and out at a fast pace, becoming dangerous because of that. There is a Queen's Guide to the Sands, an ancient and honoured post, who escorts hundreds of people at a time through the channels when the tide is low: they do it for sponsored chariitable purposes as well as the excitement!
