Description
The ancient English city of Lancaster, once the county town, but now replaced in Lancashire by the administrative centre of Preston, has a long history dating back to Roman times. Its name derives from the River Lune which emerges into Morecambe Bay at the now silted port where the castle stands ('Lune-chester'). It has a substantial amount of Georgian architecture, such as the houses here on Castle Hill, and these were built at the time when the port was prosperous. The monument in the distance is the magnificent Ashton Memorial, erected by Lord Ashton, a local industrialist, in memory of his late wife. On the right is the Roman Catholic Cathedral.
