Description
I made this sculpture many years ago, while a student in professional training but also attending an evening class in this art medium. It is based on an early work of the same name created in 1926 by the ultimately world-famous British sculptor, Henry Moore at the age of 28. It is cast in concrete, a material which Moore experimented with in the 1920s and 1930s, and it was hugely satisfying when I saw the final product emerge from the cast. Moore trained with that other renowned English sculptor of a similar style, Barbara Hepworth. The style has some influence from the cubism movement. It has been said that the model was Moore's mother. While she seems impassive and even taciturn in expression, I hope I have also conveyed a sympathetic quality.
