Artist's Description

Gaut's Cross is a tenth century stone cross at Kirk Michael, Isle of Man (it is now kept inside the church), where my grandparents are buried, my ancestors being Manx for unnumbered generations. It is a rare example of a signed work, in runic script ('Gaut made this and all in Man') and dates from the time when the conquering Scandinavian Vikings were integrating into the native Celtic culture. The central knotwork design has become iconic in the island, as a common theme in Manx culture. Archibald Knox, the now internationally renowned designer in silverwork from the early 1900s, drew much of his inspiration from such crosses, which are dotted around the island.

My Christian faith underlies what I do in art as in the rest of my life. I am a retired clinical psychologist and am married with children and grandchildren. I have no formal artistic qualifications but am...
