This collage was based on a photograph taken on a visit few years ago but was for me a creative extension of the whole magnificent experience of being in Venice, which I had visited twice before. I used a number of materials and techniques, not all of which show up on the reproduction, especially those of a reflective nature: gold and silver paper (centre) reflecting the glare of the sun behind the adjacent buildings and on the water; transparent plastic sheets for colour, also on the water; corrugated paper for the posts; printed paper and reproduced print, and bar codes from parcels with my 'signature' on a small such item. Only a small number of items are from the internet.
I was born a Manxman - a native of the Isle of Man in the centre of the British Isles - and my heritage from there sometimes brings a Celtic element to my work. However, another side of my personality has often been expressed in my acrylic painting and photography in a more extraverted, Mediterranean way. This has no doubt been influenced by the fact that I have travelled through Europe and elsewhere in the past, but I have come to look for inspiration nearer to my home in recent years in a beautiful part of the north of England. My Christian faith underlies what I do in art as in the rest of my life. I am a retired clinical psychologist and am married with children and grandchildren.
