Description
This ancient stone cross-slab is now protected from the elements inside the church at Kirk Michael, Isle of Man - in the middle of the Irish Sea, Great Britain - though it would originally have stood outside.. It dates from the eleventh century, of the late Norse period, ie. after the Viking invasion, though there are Celtic examples dating back to the eighth century. It gains its name from the stylised dragons in the side panels, as seen more clearly here on the right, their heads just below the ring of the cross-head, with pear-shaped eyes and fangs.
A number of my ancestors are buried in the same graveyard.
The internationally renowned Manx silverware artist, Archibald Knox, gained much of his inspiration from knotwork on such crosses.
