Artist's Description

The Church of St Mary de Ballaugh (pronounced 'Ball-aff') is the older of two Anglican churches in this parish, in the north of the Isle of Man in the centre of the British Isles. Little is known of the early history of the building but there is mention of a church here in a Papal Bull of 1231. It is well known for its leaning gate posts, evident on the right of the photograph.

I was born a Manxman - a native of the Isle of Man in the centre of the British Isles - and my heritage from there sometimes brings a Celtic element to my work. However, another side of my personality has often been expressed in my acrylic painting and photography in a more extraverted, Mediterranean way. This has no doubt been influenced by the fact that I have travelled through Europe and elsewhere in the past, but I have come to look for inspiration nearer to my home in recent years in a beautiful part of the north of England. My Christian faith underlies what I do in art as in the rest of my life. I am a retired clinical psychologist and am married with children and grandchildren.
