Description
The Ashton Memorial is the iconic landmark, 150 feet high, of the city of Lancaster in the county of Lancashire in the north of England, also to be seen in its massive proportions from the nearby motorway, the M6, which travels up the western side of the country leading to the Lake District. It sits at the highest point of Williamson Park, a beautiful wooded place, which famously hosts open air ambulatory theatre productions around its dells and tree-filled hollows in the summer as the sun sets (or rain pours, regardless). There are spectacular views over Morecambe Bay and the Lakeland Fells in the distance.
The Park and Memorial were donated to the city by the industrialist millionaire, Lord Ashton, in memory of his second wife, and the Memorial has been described as 'the grandest folly in England'.) It was completed in 1909. Among other things, it host weddings (Including that of our daughter!)
