Photographs of the closure of a psychiatric institution, taken in 1999. As one of a group of mental health professionals, I endeavoured to show the nature and mood of Lancaster Moor Hospital, England, as it closed and patients, or more recently called residents, were rehabilitated into normal life in the community. For many, this was their first experience for many years of all the things which most of us take for granted: independence, choice, a wide range of social contact and freedom from paternalistic oversight. I feel proud to be able to say I contributed to this process.
